Combined, their ideas form the core of modern interaction design: using technology to solve problems, but always keeping humans at the center.

Ada’s prediction that “machines could create art” has become a reality. Designers now use AI to generate sketches, color schemes, and even interactive prototypes.

Lillian’s research in human factors directly influenced Apple products, such as the pressure feedback in Mac trackpads, which significantly reduces finger fatigue, or iOS’s “Shortcuts,” which automates tasks to minimize steps.

Lovelace was actually considered the first computer programmer. Even though she was deeply involved in computers and their field, she believed in creativity. She believed that machines had way more potential than just calculation, envisioning them as tools for creativity such as the arts, music or painting. This was unheard of at her time, so for her to believe so strongly for technology to evolve in this way was inspiring. 

Gilbreth, on the other hand, helped study and understand how people interact with tools. Specifically focusing on human needs and experiences. She instead focused on designing tools for efficiency and usability, helping users greatly. Even today her work inspires putting the users needs first and working around their problems. 

In conclusion, although their fields were different, both contributed to shaping human-centered technology. Both of these women show us how good design requires both functionality, usability, and how users experience and interact. Lovelace imagined how machines could go beyond simple calculations and inspire creativity which is exactly what Interaction Designers do, bridging the gap between design and technology and users. Gilbreth’s focus on ergonomics and usability pushes the comfort and usefulness of a product, why should a user use it in the first place? It fills the need to understand what the user wants and why. Together, their work bridges the gap between technology and human interaction.

First, I’ll use Gestalt principles to structure visual elements in a way that aligns with how people naturally perceive and organize information. For example, I’ll make sure that related elements are grouped together so users can instantly see connections between them. I’ll also keep styling consistent for similar functions to make interactions more predictable and reduce cognitive load. Another big one is figure, I’ll ensure that important buttons, links, or interactive components stand out clearly against the background so users don’t have to guess where to focus. By applying these principles, I can create an interface that feels well-organized and easy to navigate.

At the same time, I’ll apply Fitts’s Law to make interactions smoother by optimizing the size and placement of interactive elements. If a button or feature is frequently used, I’ll make it larger and position it in an easily reachable area to reduce effort. For example, instead of placing key controls in hard-to-reach corners, I’ll position them where users naturally expect them—like keeping navigation menus at the edges of the screen for quick access. I’ll also ensure that tappable or clickable areas are large enough so users don’t struggle with precision, especially on touchscreens.

To combine these two frameworks, I’ll use proximity to group related actions together and then apply Fitts’s Law to ensure the most critical actions are the easiest to access. Likewise, I’ll use similarity to highlight primary actions while making sure those elements are sized and positioned optimally for interaction. By thinking about these principles together, I can design interfaces that don’t just look good but also feel effortless to use.

By arranging related functional elements reasonably, the confusion of users in operation can be effectively reduced. For example, in shopping software, the product name, picture, price and purchase button are closely arranged together, which can help users understand and operate quickly. This is especially helpful for elderly users and can significantly improve their experience.

At the same time, Fitz’s law pays more attention to the details of operation, emphasizing how to improve the efficiency of interaction through the design of interface. According to this principle, the high-frequency operation button should be placed in a position that users can easily reach, especially at the edge or lower right corner of the screen. In shopping software, placing the “Submit Order” and “Pay” buttons in the lower right corner not only conforms to the user’s operating habits, but also effectively improves the interaction efficiency.

Our goal is to make information more intuitive and accessible to users, so next time I make a design, I’ll think more about layouts or signals that users are familiar with.

Reading Fitts’s Law reminds me of one of my classes last semester, we redesigned the kiosk for Muni. If I had to design it again, I would do a much better job. Since they are touchscreens, the target areas should be as large and well-spaced as possible to prevent users from accidentally touching the wrong options. The “next step” should also be located not too far from the menu, so that the user can complete the goal more quickly and smoothly. Of course, it should not be too close as well, or users will need to be careful about clicking in that area.

In addition, for the logo design, I will think about whether it is possible to have more ingenuity in negative space by leaving out the gap, because The Law of Closure makes me understand that the human eye will think that such a logo is still closed. Also I will refer to the layout of past competitors because The Law if Past Experience tells me that people will think in terms of past experience. In addition, Fitts’s law also made me realize that the size of the elements is also very important to pay attention to, because it is necessary to distinguish the relationship between primary and secondary, so that the logic of the app can be clear and correct.

Spotify uses the Gestalt principle of similarity to help users intuitively navigate the app. Elements like song tracks, playlists, and albums are represented with similar visual styles such as consistent font sizes, colors, and layout structures. This similarity signals to the user that these elements function in comparable ways, making the interface easier to use without confusion.


Spotify adheres to Fitts’s Law by designing easily clickable areas for their play, pause, and skip buttons. These controls are larger than less frequently used buttons (like shuffle or repeat) and are centrally located at the bottom of the app where users can easily reach them without stretching their thumbs too far on mobile devices.


By understanding and observing how Spotify integrates these principles, I can see how effective UX design can guide and ease user interaction, making the experience enjoyable and efficient.
Starting with Gestalt principles, I would focus on how elements are grouped together. For example, I’d use the principle of proximity to place related buttons or features close to each other. Incorporating Fitts’s Law, I’d ensure that important interactive elements are larger and placed in easily accessible locations. This means designing buttons that users frequently click to be bigger and closer to where their mouse cursor or finger is likely to be.
