For example, if we design a shopping app that uses AI to recommend products, we need to make sure it doesn’t push people to buy things they don’t really need just to make money.

We should also be clear about what the AI is doing. Like if an app uses AI to suggest mental health advice, users should know it’s not a real doctor and understand where the info comes from. People deserve to know how their data is being used—like if an app is tracking what they click on or say.

We also have to be careful not to design things that only work well for certain people. For example, if a voice assistant only understands certain accents, that’s not fair to others. Good design should be for everyone. So our responsibility is to make smart tools that are helpful, honest, and respectful to all kinds of users.

People used it like a digital book. You could visit a website, read some news, or check information, but you couldn’t do much else. For example, if you wanted to share your opinion on a movie, you couldn’t write a comment. If you wanted to show your photos, you couldn’t upload them. Websites didn’t really “talk back” to you. It was one-way.

When Web 2.0 came, everything changed. People could now interact with websites. You could write comments under blog posts, post pictures on social media, like your friend’s vacation photos, or even edit a shared document. Everyday apps like YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram let users become creators, not just viewers. This meant websites had to add buttons, forms, likes, shares, menus, and more. Designers needed to think carefully: “What happens when someone clicks here?” or “How can we show them this action worked?” As a design student, I realize good interaction design helps people feel confident and in control.

Today, things have gone even further. We now use smartphones, voice assistants, and smart watches. People swipe, tap, scroll, or even talk to their devices. Design now has to think about different screens, fast feedback, and keeping things simple. But the core idea hasn’t changed: making it easy and fun for people to use technology in daily life.

But when Apple introduced the iPod in 2001 and the iPhone in 2007, it made technology more personal, easy to carry, and fun to use. These products gave people a new way to connect with music, the internet, and other people in their daily lives.

The iPod was one of the first devices to let people carry thousands of songs in their pocket. Its design was simple, with a click wheel that made it easy to scroll through songs quickly. People could listen to music anywhere—on the bus, while walking, or at the gym. This changed how people thought about music and technology. It wasn’t just something you used at home anymore—it became something you carried with you all the time. The iPod showed that interaction design could make technology more enjoyable and personal.

Later, the iPhone took this idea even further. It combined a phone, iPod, camera, and web browser into one device with a touchscreen. People could tap, swipe, and pinch to control it instead of using buttons. This type of interaction felt more natural and intuitive. The iPhone also introduced the App Store, which let users download different tools and games that matched their needs. Suddenly, people weren’t just using a few basic programs—they were using apps for everything from maps to health to shopping. This made interaction design even more important because apps needed to be easy to understand and use for everyone.

As someone born in the early 2000s, I grew up with these devices. I remember how exciting it was to use an iPhone for the first time. I learned to use touchscreen gestures like swiping and tapping at a young age, so they feel completely natural to me. These experiences shaped the way I think about technology today. I believe good interaction design should feel simple, even if the technology behind it is complex. It should help people do what they want without frustration.

Studying interaction design, I now understand how much thought goes into making these experiences smooth and human-friendly. The iPod and iPhone are great examples of how design can change people’s behavior and expectations. Because of them, users today expect all technology to be easy to use, responsive, and visually clear.

In terms of improvements, as machine learning and AI technologies evolve, there is a significant opportunity to tailor GUIs to individual user preferences and usage patterns, making interactions more intuitive and efficient.

But Engelbart introduced things like the computer mouse, video conferencing, and ways for people to work together on computers in real-time.

This demo had so many new ideas that it shaped the future of how we interact with technology. For example, the mouse made it much easier and more natural to point and click on things on a computer screen, which is something we still do all the time today.

Engelbart’s innovations laid the groundwork for the graphical user interfaces that we see on almost every device now, from smartphones to tablets to laptops. His idea of making technology more interactive and user-friendly is a core principle of today’s design philosophy. We see its influence in how apps and websites are designed to be intuitive and accessible, focusing on user experience. This makes sure that technology not only performs well but also fits smoothly into our daily lives and tasks, making complex tasks simpler and more enjoyable.

Spotify uses the Gestalt principle of similarity to help users intuitively navigate the app. Elements like song tracks, playlists, and albums are represented with similar visual styles such as consistent font sizes, colors, and layout structures. This similarity signals to the user that these elements function in comparable ways, making the interface easier to use without confusion.


Spotify adheres to Fitts’s Law by designing easily clickable areas for their play, pause, and skip buttons. These controls are larger than less frequently used buttons (like shuffle or repeat) and are centrally located at the bottom of the app where users can easily reach them without stretching their thumbs too far on mobile devices.


By understanding and observing how Spotify integrates these principles, I can see how effective UX design can guide and ease user interaction, making the experience enjoyable and efficient.
Starting with Gestalt principles, I would focus on how elements are grouped together. For example, I’d use the principle of proximity to place related buttons or features close to each other. Incorporating Fitts’s Law, I’d ensure that important interactive elements are larger and placed in easily accessible locations. This means designing buttons that users frequently click to be bigger and closer to where their mouse cursor or finger is likely to be. In order to reduce the effort and time needed to interact with these elements.

It shows important health information that helps users understand and manage their physical health better. In addition, the designer did not choose to place the heart in the middle of the overall icon, but to the side, which corresponds to the fact that the human heart is located on the left side of the human body.

On the other hand, the heart in Egyptian hieroglyphics had a wider and deeper meaning. Egyptians saw the heart as the center of emotions, thoughts, and the soul. The image of the heart looked like a small jar. In the afterlife, the heart was very important, and people believed it was weighed against a feather to decide one’s fate in the next life.

The metaphors used are different. In the iOS app, the heart stands for health and vitality, directly linked to medical and physical health. In Egyptian culture, the metaphor of the heart reached into moral character and the essence of life and the afterlife, symbolizing a deep connection between physical existence and spiritual morality. But I think they also have similarities. The heart icon in the app corresponds to the location of the human heart; in Egyptian culture, the heart is expressed as a small jar that can hold things like emotions, thoughts, and the soul, which means that they both have some realistic elements.

Ada Lovelace thought up the idea that machines could do a lot more than just number crunching. She believed they could also handle information like humans do. On the other hand, Lillian Gilbreth worked on making technology easier and more productive for people at work, which made jobs more enjoyable and efficient. Their ideas are really important today in IXD, where making technology that fits well with how people behave and what they need is super important.

However, both Lovelace and Gilbreth were way ahead of their time, and they didn’t get to see all the results of their ideas because the technology back then wasn’t advanced enough. Lovelace never got to see her Analytical Engine come to life because the right technology wasn’t around. Similarly, many of Gilbreth’s ideas for better workplace design couldn’t be fully achieved because the industrial technology back then was too limited.

Ada Lovelace and Lillian Gilbreth really helped start what we now call interaction design. They were thinking way into the future and their work has given them a special spot in the history of computing. They showed us how important it is to consider human needs when designing technology, which is something we still focus on in IXD today.
