We’re way past the point where good design just meant making things look pretty or work smoothly. Today, every interface we create especially those powered by AI comes with ethical baggage we can’t ignore.

First, usability is about basic human respect. When we force users to adapt to confusing layouts, inconsistent patterns, or cognitive overload, we’re failing them at a fundamental level. The rise of AI makes this even more critical when systems make decisions for people without clarity or recourse, we’re not designing helpers; we’re building digital dictators.

Transparency has become the new battleground. Users deserve to know why an AI recommended that product, denied that application, or surfaced that content. Opaque systems breed distrust, and in an era where algorithms mediate everything from healthcare to hiring, “trust us, it’s magic” isn’t good enough anymore.

Then there’s bias the silent saboteur in every AI system. These technologies amplify our societal flaws at scale, and pretending otherwise is professional malpractice. Real ethical design means proactively stress-testing for discrimination, building in safeguards, and constantly asking: “Who might this harm?”

The uncomfortable truth? Every design decision is an ethical decision. When we prioritize engagement metrics over well-being, when we value convenience over consent, when we build without considering unintended consequences we’re making choices that ripple through real people’s lives.

This isn’t about adding ethics as an afterthought. It’s about recognizing that in 2024, good design can’t exist without ethical foundations. Our tools shape human behavior more powerfully than ever, and with that power comes responsibility we can’t delegate or downgrade.

The question isn’t whether we have time for ethics in design. It’s whether we can afford not to make it our top priority.

Back then, just being able to click on a folder or open a window with a mouse felt futuristic. Now we’re swiping, tapping, talking to our devices, and even interacting in VR spaces. As Bob Cotton pointed out, interfaces today are way more “hot” and “deep,” packed with animations, videos, and immersive 3D graphics. But here’s the interesting part: while the look and feel of GUIs have evolved a ton, the core design principles like consistency, feedback, and undo functions haven’t really changed. Ben Shneiderman’s Eight Golden Rules are still totally relevant, even in today’s tech world. At the end of the day, users just want something that’s intuitive and reliable.

That said, there’s still plenty of room for improvement. Let’s be honest modern interfaces can be overwhelming. Too much info, cluttered layouts, way too many buttons… it’s a lot. And with all the different devices we use phones, tablets, laptops, smartwatches, VR headsets the user experience isn’t always seamless. Plus, as our user base becomes more diverse, we really need to step up in terms of accessibility and inclusive design. So yeah, GUI has come a long way, but the next step is making sure it works beautifully for everyone, everywhere.

It was like bringing the physical office into the digital world, and for the first time, computers felt approachable. The Star also fully embraced the WIMP paradigm Windows, Icons, Menus, and Pointers which is now the backbone of every operating system we use today. And let’s not forget the mouse. But the Star wasn’t just about looks it was about making computing consistent and predictable. Every application followed the same rules, so once you learned how to use one program, you could easily figure out the rest. This focus on usability was a game changer, especially for non-technical users who just wanted to get work done without a computer science degree.

And then there was the networking. The Star was one of the first computers to support Ethernet, allowing users to share files and collaborate over a network. Sound familiar? It was an early glimpse of the interconnected digital workspaces we take for granted today.

For example, I’ll make sure that related elements are grouped together so users can instantly see connections between them. I’ll also keep styling consistent for similar functions to make interactions more predictable and reduce cognitive load. Another big one is figure, I’ll ensure that important buttons, links, or interactive components stand out clearly against the background so users don’t have to guess where to focus. By applying these principles, I can create an interface that feels well-organized and easy to navigate.

At the same time, I’ll apply Fitts’s Law to make interactions smoother by optimizing the size and placement of interactive elements. If a button or feature is frequently used, I’ll make it larger and position it in an easily reachable area to reduce effort. For example, instead of placing key controls in hard-to-reach corners, I’ll position them where users naturally expect them—like keeping navigation menus at the edges of the screen for quick access. I’ll also ensure that tappable or clickable areas are large enough so users don’t struggle with precision, especially on touchscreens.

To combine these two frameworks, I’ll use proximity to group related actions together and then apply Fitts’s Law to ensure the most critical actions are the easiest to access. Likewise, I’ll use similarity to highlight primary actions while making sure those elements are sized and positioned optimally for interaction. By thinking about these principles together, I can design interfaces that don’t just look good but also feel effortless to use.
