Ethical design means centering human values—like empathy, dignity, and fairness—over convenience or profit.

As AI systems increasingly make decisions that affect people’s lives, designers must be vigilant about the biases embedded in algorithms and training data. They should advocate for inclusive development practices, push for fairness in automated decision-making, and ensure that users can control their data and opt out when possible. Privacy, consent, and accessibility aren’t just features—they’re moral obligations. Ultimately, interaction designers are the bridge between complex technology and everyday users, and it’s their job to make sure that bridge is safe, fair, and built with integrity.

Prior to these devices, technology tended to be stationary (such as desktop computers) or task-specific. Before the iPod, the notion of carrying around a media library in your pocket was alien; the iPhone turned that idea into one that included not just media itself but also communication, the internet, photography and apps under one smooth, touch-led interface. This gave technology a more personal texture, a feeling that it was an extension of the self, something we hold and use all the time, and use through intuitive gestures like tapping, swiping and pinching.

This transformation had major influence on interaction design, making designers to think first and foremost about mobility, simplicity and the human interface. Physical buttons were replaced by touchscreens, and that led to less sculpting of the UI, more gestural UI. Apps had to suit small screens, short attention spans and constant interruptions. Interaction design also started to take an interest in emotional bonding, habits, and the societal aspects of being ‘always connected.’ “People had to reinvent the way they lived with and through their devices,” said Ms. Rubin. “Technology had become more of an appendage of you throughout the day, and the iPod/iPhone cemented that change.”

The web we have today, however, has grown beyond connecting documents and has become a rich platform of interactive content, media, and highly functional applications, and these capabilities are best available when developers are able to harness the newest technologies. Whereas Web 2.0 was about engagement and social connectivity, the web is now about real-time, context-rich, and multi-platform experiences.

Modern GUIs now feature high-resolution graphics, smooth animations, dark mode options, and adaptive layouts for different devices, including touchscreens and voice-controlled systems. The shift toward mobile and cloud-based computing has also influenced GUI design, prioritizing seamless cross-platform experiences and accessibility.

Despite these changes, some core elements of GUI design have remained the same. The desktop metaphor, icons representing applications, and a window-based system for multitasking continue to be fundamental. However, as technology advances, there is still room for improvement. Many modern interfaces can become cluttered, leading to cognitive overload, and some emerging input methods, like voice and gesture controls, still lack precision. Future developments should focus on making GUIs more intuitive, adaptive, and user-friendly while maintaining a balance between functionality and simplicity.

Instead of working with pre-defined usability metrics, she underscored the necessity to examine the ways in which people actually use technology in their environments. She learned that usability is not just about technology being able to function for an end user but also about how people construct understandings of and navigate technology in practice.

In the video we are seeing, Suchman observed people working with a Xerox photocopier that was designed to be user-friendly. Rather than the follow-the-machine’s-step-by-step-instructions way, users struggled, hesitated and improvised their way through their tasks. The designers had taken a linear, logical route to user interaction, but Suchman’s study indicated that people wean new systems through trial and error, contextual cues, and past usage experience. This illustrated one of the key shortcomings of a traditional usability test: it fails to consider how a user will actually act outside of those environments.

The reading from a few weeks back did a great job reinforcing about Suchman’s idea of “situated action” — the notion that how humans interact with technology is context sensitive, shaped by prior experience and the immediate environment, instead of following clear-cut, defined rules. She critiqued the notion that a good or usable experience could simply be designed in isolation, noting that understanding how technology integrates into people’s real workflows requires observation and ethnographic research. Demonstrating that users make sense of technology in deeply adaptive fashions, she called for design strategies that consider this complexity.

Suchman’s analysis changed the landscape of interaction design, UX research, and AI development by prioritizing human practice over system logic. She revealed that usability is not a checklist of design principles, but something to be observed and iterated upon based on real user behavior. Her work is still seeing resonance, especially in realms like AI, automation and UX design, where systems break down when they fail to consider the unpredictable way in which humans use technology. By prioritising the ways of working of real people over the sometimes rigidly ostensible design of social systems, Suchman redefined what it means for technology to “work” for its users.

It introduced the first commercial graphical user interface (GUI), which let users interact with icons, windows, and menus instead of typing complex commands. This made computers way easier to use, especially for people who weren’t tech experts. The Xerox Star also popularized the “desktop metaphor,” where files and folders were represented as objects you could move around, just like on a real desk. Plus, it was one of the first systems to use a mouse, which is now a standard tool for computers. These ideas might seem normal today, but back then, they were totally revolutionary.

Another big deal about the Xerox Star was its focus on networking and document creation. It allowed multiple computers to connect and share resources like printers, which was pretty advanced for the early 1980s. It also introduced WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editing, meaning documents looked the same on the screen as they did when printed. This was a huge step forward for offices and publishing. Even though the Xerox Star itself wasn’t a commercial success, its ideas inspired future systems like the Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows. Basically, the Xerox Star set the stage for the user-friendly, networked computers we rely on today.

  • Often dubbed the Mother of All Demos — introduced concepts that would underpin the development of modern human-computer interaction.

While attending the Fall Joint Computer Conference in San Francisco, Engelbart and his team at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) demonstrated a working system that presented many new interactive concepts related to computers, including:

  • the computer mouse,
  • hypertext,
  • real-time text editing,
  • videoconferencing.

These concepts were game changers when computing was mostly command-line and done by professionals.

Laurie Vertelney and others, in Two Disciplines in Search of an Interface, point out that Engelbart bridged the two disciplines of engineering and design,

  • leading to user-centered computing.

His demonstration highlighted how computers could boost human brainpower rather than simply take over. This dovetails with Bob Cotton’s piece in The History of Interactivity, which emphasizes Engelbart’s contribution as having made computing less of a technical tool and instead an interactive medium, impacting the graphical user interfaces (GUIs) that followed.

The importance of Engelbart’s work is evident, too,

  • from the perspective of interface design principles.
  • The Eight Golden Rules of Interface Design focus on:
    • consistency,
    • feedback,
    • user control — values that are echoed in Engelbart’s vision.

In his system, intuitive interactions were crucial to encouraging user engagement, and in many ways, he was building the foundation for contemporary digital experiences.

In the end, Engelbart’s demo wasn’t merely a showcase for new technology; it was a manifesto for interactive computing. It went on to reshape the way people could use machines, paving the way for innovations in personal computing and, eventually, the internet.

In relation to Fitts’s Law, this means making buttons large enough to be easily clickable and placing commonly used controls where they can be quickly reached. I feel that combining these ideas helps create a smoother, more user-friendly experience.

Lovelace realized that computers could do more than just math—they could work with symbols and patterns, which is basically how programming works now. Even though computers didn’t exist in her time, her ideas were way ahead, and I think that’s really impressive.

Lillian Gilbreth focused more on how people move and interact with things, and she worked to make everyday tasks easier. She studied how small changes in design could make work more efficient, which is something we still think about in interaction design today. I think both of them showed how technology should be made to work better for people, not the other way around. Their ideas still influence how we design things to be more useful and user-friendly.

The Mayan culture used pictographs and glyphs to express language, sounds, and concepts. For example: Mountain Glyph: Depicts a mountain or hill. Food Glyph: Denotes food or sustenance.

For doing the comparison, the communication part is specific information is communicated via symbols in both systems. Whereas Mayan pictographs capture intricate concepts and stories, Google Maps symbols offer instantaneous, intuitive comprehension of places and services.
