Watching videos and thinking about inclusive design has shown me the big responsibility of being an interaction design student. We need to make sure our designs are accessible to everyone. Haben Girma’s talk at WWDC 2016 made a strong impression on me. She sees inclusive design as not just respecting people with disabilities but as something that benefits everyone. It goes beyond following rules; it’s about creating a fair society.

Haben’s visit to the White House in 2015, where she showcased a text communication system for people with disabilities, emphasizes the importance of inclusive design. President Obama’s appreciation shows how crucial it is to promote inclusivity and accessible design.

Haben’s experience with a dragon fruit in China, using a camera to understand it and seek input, made me think about how technology, like a camera, can enhance accessibility. It became a tool to overcome barriers, highlighting the idea of making information easily accessible to all through design and technology. This example makes me reconsider if our designs truly consider everyone’s experience.

Liz Jackson’s design approach makes me think about including diverse experiences in the design process. It’s not just about one user group but about meeting the unique needs of everyone.

Learning about Catherine Wolf, a pioneer in human-computer interaction, shows me how design can make a big difference for people with disabilities. Through innovation and inclusive design, we can provide more opportunities for them to participate fully in society.

It’s not just about organization; visual design adds another layer, akin to crafting a visually appealing painting that enhances understanding.

Reflecting on experience design, it brings to mind a classroom discussion about how people used to spend less money to bake cakes or make bread at home. Now, individuals are willing to invest hundreds of dollars in hiring a team to celebrate their child’s birthday. This shift reflects a transformation in consumer behavior, emphasizing the growing importance of experiences over traditional products. It underscores how the value of design extends beyond functionality to create memorable and emotionally resonant experiences, impacting not only digital interfaces but also shaping broader societal trends in consumption and celebration.

Through learning about Steve Jobs, Joy Mountford, and the evolution of the Graphical User Interface (GUI), I have gained a deeper understanding of the history and development of graphical user interfaces. In particular, Jobs’ visit to PARC and Mountford’s work underscore the power of innovation and the importance of user interface design. These stories emphasize that, regardless of the era, user interfaces should be user-friendly, intuitive, and easy to operate. Steve Jobs was an outstanding innovator who played a pivotal role in the development of GUI by introducing concepts like the mouse, windows, and bitmap graphics in Apple’s Macintosh computer, laying the foundation for modern computer interfaces. Joy Mountford, on the other hand, emphasized the micro-level aspects of user interface design, highlighting the critical impact of finer details on the user experience. As a student studying Human-Computer Interaction Design. I find the Xerox Star computer pretty amazing. This computer, introduced in 1981, did something special. It made computers easier for people to use. It had a visual interface with icons, windows, and a mouse, which is how we use computers today. Before this, computers were mostly text-based and not very user-friendly.

The Xerox Star also changed how we work with documents. It made text on the screen look just like it would on paper, which was a big deal back then. Plus, it could send messages to other people on the same network, like a very early form of email. This started the idea of computers being able to talk to each other.

This computer influenced other companies like Apple and Microsoft. They borrowed ideas from the Xerox Star to make their own computers better. So, as an HCI student, I’d feel impressed by how the Xerox Star made technology easier to use and inspired many of the things we do with computers today. It’s a reminder of how innovations from the past continue to shape the future of technology.

Douglas Engelbart and his team at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) conducted a demonstration that is often referred to as the “mother of all demos.” In the demo, Engelbart introduced the computer mouse, This made computers easier to use. This innovation laid the foundation for the modern graphical user interface (GUI), which makes it easier for people to interact with computers.

Engelbart also demonstrated the concept of windows, icons, and menus, which are the basic elements of today’s GUIs.
The demo also shows the concept of real-time collaboration using computers. Engelbart and his team showed how multiple people could work together on a document, even if they were in different locations. This was the forerunner of modern collaboration tools and laid the groundwork for technologies such as Google Docs and videoconferencing.

As a student of human-computer interaction design, watching Douglas Engelbart’s seminal 1968 presentation would be a truly awe-inspiring experience. It is interesting and admirable to witness the origins of basic technologies such as the computer mouse and graphical user interfaces that I use in my daily life. This demonstration became a source of inspiration for the tools we now use on a daily basis, inspiring the current generation of designers to think creatively and innovatively, and shaping the pioneers of the technological world. I gained new insights into the historical foundations of computing.

I think the concepts and techniques demonstrated in Engelbart’s demo had a profound and lasting impact on the development of human-computer interaction. Many of the ideas presented in the demonstration influenced the work of researchers and innovators who went on to create the technologies we use today.

The next time I sit down to design an interactive piece of software, I will incorporate Gestalt Principles and Fitt’s Law into my software design endeavors to craft a software that is appealing to look at, efficient in its functionality, and user-friendly.

First, I will follow the proximity principle by grouping related elements together. This helps users to recognize the connections between elements and thus understand the interface more intuitively. By arranging the elements in a purposeful and logical manner, I can create a sense of order and guide the user through a seamless interaction.

At the same time, I will harness the power of similarity by using consistent visual cues (e.g., color, shape, or size) to indicate relationships between elements. This approach helps users recognize patterns in the interface, enabling them to make informed decisions. Additionally, I will capitalize on the principle of closure by using white space and connecting lines to imply completeness and ensure that users see the interface as a unified whole.

Continuity is another Gestalt principle that I will utilize in my design. By creating smooth and fluid visual paths, I can guide the user easily through multi-step processes such as forms or wizards. This principle ensures that transitions between different parts of the software are intuitive and there are no sudden breaks.

Additionally, I will apply the “graphic-ground” principle to ensure that interactive elements stand out extraordinarily well against the background. Better direct the user’s attention to key actions and information.

Fitt’s Law deals with the ease of target selection. I will prioritize the size and placement of interactive elements, especially those that are used frequently. I will employ larger buttons and controls, especially in the corners and edges of the screen, to facilitate quick and precise clicks or taps.

In addition, I will implement progressive disclosure to simplify the user experience. By displaying only relevant options or controls at each stage of interaction, I can reduce visual clutter and cognitive load, making the software easier and less burdensome for users to use. This approach improves the overall experience for users by ensuring they have the exact information and choices they need, when they need them.

Setting smart defaults speeds up the decision-making process for users because they don’t have to make unnecessary choices. By considering the characteristics of different input methods, such as touchscreens and mice, I will customize the interface accordingly to ensure a seamless, intuitive interaction for users with a variety of devices.

Ada Lovelace

Ada Lovelace, who lived in the 1800s, is known as the world’s first computer programmer. She worked with a pioneer named Charles Babbage on a machine called the Analytical Engine, one of the earliest computers. Ada Lovelace didn’t just translate an article about it; she added lots of notes and explanations, including a way to calculate numbers. Her notes are now seen as the first computer program ever made.

But what makes her really special is that she didn’t stop at numbers. She imagined that machines like the Analytical Engine could do more than just math; they could also make music, create art, and do many other things.

Ada Lovelace’s work is important because it shows that even in the early days of computers, people were thinking about how machines could interact with humans and do more than just crunch numbers.

 

Lillian Gilbreth

Lillian Gilbreth was an expert in making work easier and better for people. She worked with her husband, Frank Gilbreth, and they were the first to study how people do their jobs. They looked at how people move and use their time at work.

Their research helped make work faster and more efficient. They found ways to do things better, like making tools and workspaces that fit people well. They wanted to make sure workers felt good and did their jobs well.

Lillian Gilbreth’s work is a big deal because it teaches us that how things are designed can make a big difference in how well people do their jobs and how happy they are at work. This idea of thinking about people when designing things is super important in interaction design.
