In my exploration of how interaction design and AI come together, I delved into the ethical considerations that shape the magic and also the hidden challenges of these digitally interactive spaces.

During my exploration in the Behavior Core Studio of Interaction Design (IxD), a glaring concern surfaced which is the prevalence of dark patterns employed by major companies. These deceptive design practices manipulate user behavior, with giants like Amazon and Ticketmaster employing tactics that hinder account deletion or spring surprise costs during checkout. This raises serious questions about prioritizing user well-being over deceptive practices.

Meanwhile, AI holds a dual role as both a creative inspiration and potential limiter, shaping perceptions almost magically. This prompts reflection on the influence of generative AI results in constraining creative thinking. In the competitive force of AI development, concerns arise regarding the arms race for data, with implications for exploitative labor practices and ethical considerations in business. Additionally, the integration of data into our lives raises warnings about the potential for AI to facilitate authoritarian control, sparking crucial ethical debates around its impact on art, perpetuation of stereotypes, and biases.

In my opinion, urgent action is needed to establish ethical AI practices and laws, safeguarding individual creativity and curbing technology misuse. As UX designers, placing the user’s well-being above business interests is not just a responsibility but a moral imperative, ensuring that technology serves humans ethically and responsibly rather then enslaving them!!

During the exploration of Amber Case’s biography, the concept of Calm Technology captured my attention, and it felt very viable for the future’s wheel. I am truly convinced that it signifies our future. Calm technology has the potential to revolutionize various aspects of our lives, contributing to enhanced overall well-being, improved physical and mental health, increased work productivity, business growth, and even the evolution of smart homes. If given the chance in the future, I am eager to delve into the realm of calm technology. I want to learn about  its transformative capabilities for the betterment of human experiences.

Accessibility is a crucial aspect of interaction design, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their varying abilities, can seamlessly navigate online spaces. The realization struck me when witnessing my grandmother struggle with tiny fonts and understanding how my color-blind classmate perceives hues differently than many. Digital accessibility is not just a passing trend; it’s the cornerstone of making websites and apps universally usable.

As a prospective interaction designer, I often ponder the experience of using a website with closed eyes – a challenging task that emphasizes the importance of tools like screen readers. These tools become the go-to features for individuals with visual impairments, narrating the content on the screen and facilitating their interaction with digital platforms. Similarly, envisioning videos without sound highlights the significance of captions, ensuring an inclusive experience for all users, whether they are in a noisy environment or simply prefer reading the content. Digital accessibility extends beyond visual and auditory considerations. It encompasses creating interfaces that cater to a diverse range of abilities, acknowledging that not everyone finds it easy to use a mouse or touchpad. Designing with larger buttons and accommodating keyboard navigation becomes a superpower for those who may face motor challenges.

As a prospective interaction designer myself, I believe that we are not just creators or designers; we are all architects of inclusive experiences. We appreciate the intricacies involved in making our designs accessible to everyone. This involves incorporating technical aspects of user experience (UX) design, such as creating alt text for images, implementing high-contrast ratios, and ensuring seamless keyboard navigation. It’s about understanding the diverse needs of users and continuously refining our designs to foster a sense of comfort and usability for everyone.

In the realm of UX design, the commitment to digital accessibility is not just a professional duty; it’s a moral responsibility. It is about acknowledging the unique journeys of each user and building digital spaces that empower, include, and enrich the experiences of all individuals.

My Journey with Apple’s iPods

My first step into the world of Apple devices was when I received a pink iPod Shuffle as a gift from my parents. This sleek, pocket-sized MP3 player, in a vibrant pink color, became my new best buddy. Given to me by my parents on a Christmas morning, it was their attempt at providing me with a device they thought “indestructible” yet capable of bringing joy through music during long car rides—a nemesis of my childhood.

For years, my iPod Shuffle and I were inseparable. Though limited to the realm of music, it served its purpose diligently. However, everything changed when the iPod 7th generation made its debut. I was so happy, not only because it was an upgrade, but it introduced me to a world with a screen—a feature I had never experienced before.

Despite lacking cellular capabilities, the newfound screen opened up a universe of possibilities. No longer confined to just music, I found myself exploring games, delving into photography, and discovering numerous other features that transformed the device from a simple MP3 player into a multifunctional tool. The transition from a screen-less iPod Shuffle to a screen-equipped iPod marked a major shift in my interaction with technology. The introduction of a screen brought attention to the significance of interaction design. Suddenly, the user interface (UI) became a crucial part of my engagement with the device. The simplicity, smoothness, and clarity of the UI played a pivotal role in enhancing my overall experience. It wasn’t just about having access to more features; it was about how seamlessly I could navigate through them.

Like many others, I developed a genuine emotional attachment to Apple’s iPods. They were more than gadgets; they were teachers that guided my understanding of how to interact with and leverage technology effectively. In this journey, interaction design emerged as a silent yet influential force because I intuitively learnt how to use apple iPhones, iPads and MacBook laptops in my years growing up, the prior knowledge is instilled in me. The evolution from a non-screen device to one with a screen emphasized how the design of user interfaces shapes our experiences. The simplicity and intuitiveness of the design not only made the transition enjoyable but also laid the foundation for my future interactions with technology.

As I reflect on those early encounters with Apple’s iPods, I realize that my personal journey mirrors the broader shift in how society interacts with technology. The iPods, with their evolving designs and interfaces, played a pivotal role in shaping not just our preferences for gadgets but also our expectations for how we engage with the digital world. The emotional connection we form with these devices goes beyond the physical; it extends to the thoughtful design choices that make our interactions memorable and meaningful.

Web 2.0 introduced interactivity, social connectivity, and user-generated content. For my understanding, I divide Web 2.0 in two decades. In the first decade, users  of the web became active participants, and had ability to leave comments and engage in discussions. Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter connected people globally. User-generated content became normalized, prompting us users to create and share content. Mobile devices, such as smartphones obviously made web access very easy.

As we moved into the second decade, Web 2.0 underwent significant changes. Apps like Airbnb or Uber for example—enhanced online interactions, making services more convenient and accessible. Web 2.0 also dominated web-centric applications that redefined online interactivity and utility. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Uber, WhatsApp, and YouTube became integral parts of our daily lives, offering communication and new forms of interaction.

There was an overall rise in number of people earning their incomes in millions through online platform opportunities. Being one of these people, I also began to post my photography and travel content on Instagram and gained a lot of reach, and experiencing this first-hand certainly helps me understanding the benefits of Web 2.0, however, I also realized that it also meant that there will be a certain level of negativity spread through uncontrolled harsh comments on social media.

In my opinion, Web 2.0 affected certain traditional sectors like retail and media, forcing them to adapt to this change. With Web 3.0 on in the foreseeable future, promises even more significant changes in how we interact with the internet.

Serife Wong delved into the interconnections between the fields of art, craft, and design in the context of the emerging AI paradigm. She critically analyzed the relationship between art and technology, offering a “formal artistic inquiry” (Wong) to enlighten the audience. While researching her website I learnt that Wong is an “advocate for justice in AI and push for more active roles for artists in policymaking,” which I found an especially interesting because I was hearing a new approach to the discussion of generative AI.

Wong initiated her discussion by closely observing the prevailing trends in AI utilization. She notes that text-based AI is the most widely engaged with, followed by image-based AI, while video and music AI are less commonly encountered. A key point highlighted by Wong is the pervasive hype surrounding AI, driven by the belief that AI can bring to life the fantastical ideas of our childhood. Wong aptly characterizes AI as something magical, something that has the power to fundamentally shape our perceptions—this was one major realization I had during the talk! I would really be interested in learning the psychological aspect of why we tend to get influenced by results of generative AI and close our ideas into a box after we use AI..

Furthermore, the talk focused on the dynamic landscape in which both business and government play pivotal roles and emergence of generative AI has stirred quite a lot of excitement and anxiety. Something that really got me thinking was Wong’s explanation of emerging AI as an arms race and emphasizes the significance of peeking behind the curtain to truly learn whether AI will ultimately serve to save or disrupt our world.

Wong further delves into the insatiable “hunger” (Wong) of AI for data, raising valid concerns about exploitative labor practices and the potential for misleading presentations of AI’s capabilities. I agree with her firm emphasis on the idea that the primary concern lies with unethical users, such as companies using AI to replace writers and devalue their creative work rather than with the technology itself and I would like to learn more about the laws that are currently underway to stop this problem from rising in the business world.

As data becomes an increasingly integral part of our lives, Wong explains the potential for authoritarian control and the ethical debates regarding AI’s potential theft of art. Wong accurately suggests that generative AI serves as both a digital commodity and “a form of propaganda” (Wong), which increases stereotypes and biases that influence people’s beliefs. AI tools are progressively infiltrating our daily lives, exerting a significant influence on our thoughts and perceptions. Wong shares a personal experience of AI tools narrowing her creative ideas. She also raises legitimate concerns about the accumulation of data, which can enable surveillance and provide authoritarians with a means of control.

Another completely new insight I got was from the explanation that art, whether intentionally or unintentionally, is algorithmic, serving as a medium through which beliefs and perceptions are shaped, without necessarily revealing the inner workings.

In conclusion, Wong explains the imperative need to resist the “instrumentalization of creativity for the consolidation of power” and highlights the importance of considering how AI is employing us. She advocates for the “resistance of AI hype and encourages the building of solidarity within the field”.

As technology and the internet have become increasingly integrated into our daily lives, users now have higher expectations for websites and apps. It’s not just about having a visually appealing page with captivating graphics; users are looking for interactive, user-friendly, and enjoyable experiences. This shift in user behavior has prompted designers to prioritize functionality over just aesthetics. With the diverse range of devices, including different phones and screen sizes, designers must ensure that websites and apps perform seamlessly on all platforms.

In my opinion, businesses have come to recognize the significant impact of a positive user experience on their profitability. Satisfied users tend to stick around, make repeat purchases, and recommend products or services to others. This realization has elevated the importance of user experience (UX) design in the business world. A well-crafted user experience not only improves customer satisfaction but also sets a product apart from its competitors. UX design plays a pivotal role in helping businesses establish a unique identity and achieve success in the market.

 In addition, I believe that a crucial aspect of UX design is ensuring that digital products are accessible to everyone, including individuals with disabilities. This emphasis on inclusivity and accessibility is a leading factor for the growth of UX design.

UX design often involves collaboration with experts from various fields, including psychology, human-computer interaction, and usability testing. This  approach helps designers gain a comprehensive understanding of user needs and preferences, enabling them to create products that resonate with a diverse audience.

This week’s reading opened my eyes to the intriguing concept of pace layers, which was entirely new to me. It’s amazing how Interaction Design design incorporates various concepts and theories from different subjects of study. In my understanding, pace layers show how different parts of a design change at different speeds.

In my Behavior Studio IxD Core Studio at CCA, I’m creating an app called NAGOMI, which is inspired by the Japanese philosophy of finding balance in life. As I connect this design process to pace layers, I see that the outer layers change quickly. They include the appearance, the aesthetics, and technological aspects of my project, influenced by the latest design trends and emerging technologies. It’s like the ever-changing heartbeat of my work.

On the other hand, the inner layers represent the core of my designs: user needs, core functionality, and long-term objectives. For Nagomi App, this is the idea of searching for balance in life. These core ideas change more slowly, providing a sturdy foundation for my work. This understanding has helped me create designs that not only look modern but also have lasting value and become timeless.

Pace layers have shaped how I handle the iterative aspect of my design process. I’ve learned to update the outer layers of my projects as trends and technology evolve, all the while keeping the inner layers constant. This approach ensures a consistent and user-centered experience. I believe that the understanding of pace layers is important for any interaction designer who wants to enhance their work!

In a world where technological advancements have become an integral part of our daily lives, it’s worth considering who should take the responsibility for inventing new technology. History has shown that the most successful and transformative innovations often result from a collaborative effort involving governments, corporations, and open-source ventures. 

I believe that government funding acts as a catalyst in the process of technological innovation. Governments, particularly through defense budgets and research initiatives, have played a pivotal role in jumpstarting many groundbreaking technologies. Take the internet, for example; it originated from ARPANET, a project funded by the U.S. Department of Defense. Government-sponsored research can focus on long-term societal benefits rather than immediate profits. Corporate Innovation and Market Integration provides access to key resources, infrastructure, and market orientation needed to take innovations from the research labs to the markets. They invest in research and development, refine technologies, and bring them to consumers in ways that make our lives easier and more efficient. Finally, Open source ventures complete the cycle of innovation. Utilizing this spirit of collaboration, leads to rapid technological progress.

In my opinion, the responsibility for inventing new technology should not be solely on one entity. A balanced, collaborative approach, with each sector playing to its strengths, ensures that innovation is both accelerated and made widely accessible. Government funding can foster foundational research, corporations can commercialize and distribute technologies, and open source initiatives can ensure affordability and inclusivity.

Let’s explore the journey and evolution of graphical user interfaces (GUI). Back in 1984, the Macintosh was a game-changer. It was the first to use a mouse and a GUI, and it made handling windows and icons quite easy. Dragging and dropping files and folders was an exciting new feature. Mac OS 1.0, though limited and pricey, took the GUI to the masses. Windows 1.0 wasn’t as successful, but it marked its place in the GUI race.

From the early Macintosh and Windows days to the sleek interfaces we use today, it’s clear that user-centric design has always been at the heart of this journey. Apple and Microsoft continued their pursuit of a better user experience, and the fundamental concepts of GUIs, like drag-and-drop functionality and visual file management, are still available on our laptops today. Its interesting how the apple logo on the top left corner and the folder icons are still the same! Overall, as technology advanced, GUI designs evolved to become more streamlined and intuitive compared to cluttered interfaces in the past. 

One exciting area for improvement is the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, enabling personalized user experiences that adapt to individual preferences and habits. Accessibility remains a crucial challenge, demanding inclusive designs usable by individuals with diverse abilities. Future interface designs should prioritize accessibility and also address the rising concerns of user data privacy and security. Looking ahead, we can anticipate interface design innovations in virtual and augmented reality, bringing together our digital and physical worlds. Personally, I am eager to witness the continued impact of technology, especially to revolutionize healthcare.  I believe it is essential that technological advancement prioritizes reliability and minimizes errors. In my opinion, a commitment to quality and precision will be crucial.

In summary, the history of GUIs is a journey marked by innovation and constant evolution and it was a path worth exploring!
