\nHayes Valley was once considered one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in San Francisco. Following\nchanges in urban planning following the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake and broader economic trends, the\nneighborhood began to gentrify into what is now one of the most affluent zip codes in the City.

\nDespite the status of the neighborhood and its residents, Covid and the government\u2019s responses were devastating\nto local businesses. In March of 2020, Mayor London Breed ordered all businesses to close for an indefinite and\nextensive period which tested the ability of many local businesses to survive. The protests following the killing\nof George Floyd and social unrest added an extra layer of tension to a world already on edge. Some businesses\nwere forced to close, others boarded their windows and many found ways to keep a heartbeat through the worst\nof times.

\nVisiting Hayes Valley a year after the shutdown, you can witness both the ingenuity of businesses that have\nadapted to a new way of life and see the economic scars of a global pandemic in \u201cFor Lease\u201d signs littered\nthroughout neighborhoods like Hayes Valley. And yet, with the City closing streets to cars on weekends and\npeople getting vaccinated, the Hayes Valley you walk through today has just as much vitality as it did a year\nago, if not more, albeit masked, sanitized and socially distanced. Hayes Valley offers an intimate portrait of how\npeople\u2019s lives were upended and transformed through a global crisis, and a testament to the creativity of the\nbusiness owners, old and new, who populate its storefronts, sidewalks and streets.<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Yotam Israeli, 32, owner of Lux Fit SF, was one of the first to open an outdoor gym in San Francisco during the pandemic. Israeli said that with gyms closing during the pandemic, both members and trainers were left to fend for themselves. Most trainers either started their own business or switched careers. Since he managed close to 300 trainers in San Francisco, Israeli knew there were other people in a similar position. After months of market research and contract negotiations, Yotam and his partners were able to launch LuxFit SF on December 1st, 2020. \u201cI've always wanted to help people. Growing up, I was filled with self-doubt. I wanted to help people overcome self-doubt through motivation, inspiration, and education. Most people know that they need to move to stay healthy. However, most people don't know how. Since it was difficult for me to workout at home, I knew it must be challenging for others as well!\u201d Israeli and his team are in the process of a huge expansion project. \u201dWe are going to create the first of its kind in San Francisco - an open-air gym. We're designing storage units to be converted to a full gym. It'll have fully operable doors, permanent outdoor workout structures, and still maintain the 5,000 square feet of blacktop training space.
